Chapter Introduction

"There are so many roots to the tree of anger

that sometimes the branches shatter

before they bear."

--- Audre Lorde, "Who Said It Was Simple"

Part One Roaming

How does one define “pride”? Is pride a geographical concept, or a psychological one? What encapsulates queerness? Is it possible to condense queerness into one word?

Humans of Pride differs from established chapters of Humans Of in precisely its ambiguity. Pride sprawls, all giddy and slippery, dyed the colors of an emergency. A sliver of colors that belies the monochromatic tragedies of skidded time, rippling in the plasma of the past. It is haphazard, it morphs, it escapes and undoes between the waves: the semiotic and the symbolic, the genotext and the phenotext, the fabula and the syuzhet.

As chroniclers of queer life, we try our best to capture its echo, the dawn-skinned aftermath of its retreat, the sand stewing in the stone-still waves. Our misson is not to pin it down, net it, squeezing out dead, stomached words. We follow the trail of the blaze, porous against its colors, letting the light stitch in our hands.

In our presentation of queer life – an indefinable parameter in itself – we disrupt linearity, capturing the interrupted. And so we reject the monologic, the simplicity of a single medium. Queer stories are multidimensional: they can be heard, touched, and breathed.
