Chapter Introduction

“The lamps are different, but the light is the same. It comes from beyond.”

The essence of all religion is in unison, only its approaches stem into different sprouts. From the chants in Buddhist temples to the songs of Christian churches, faith is an ever-evolving, fluid identity that dances across the tapestry of human existence.

This chapter specifically unveils Shanghai’s rich spiritual heritage as the nexus of East and West, ancient and contemporary. It explores the dilemma of localization that entails individual footprints of resilience and Sinicization in Christianity. This chapter unfolds not only to Christianity but to every faith narrative, transcending not just the geographic bonds of Shanghai but extending beyond cultures and continents.

Standing from an oriental perspective, we seek to uphold our cultural and spiritual understanding while hoping to connect the diverse, seemingly separate faith communities across China and beyond into one unison. We hope to establish a shared narrative that explores the internal, vibrant, and resilient expression of our universal language of faith.

Whisper to us a story from anywhere and anything – an echo, a calling, a path, and a unique spiritual journey.
