In the evening, as I stepped into the campus of Tangwan Primary School, I could feel the strong autumn breeze. Inside the classroom, two girls ran over holding hands to welcome us. I was drawn to the bright smiles on their faces, which led to a deeper conversation. I think what I liked most was their vibrant energy.
The two girls enthusiastically introduced themselves: “I’m Zhang Kexin, and this is Lin Yuxin! Both of our names have ‘xin’ in them!” They exchanged a smile, then took our hands and ran to a whiteboard in the classroom, excitedly sharing this coincidence that was unique to their friendship.

When I asked them about their favorite subjects, they answered, “P.E. and Computer science!” “In Computer Science class, we get to play on the computer, and I like watching funny videos. Everyone thinks I’m a funny girl!” The lively Zhang Kexin spoke animatedly, while Lin Yuxin, standing next to her, nodded and smiled at us.
“I can draw, dance, play the piano, and sing because I think girls should know a bit of everything.” “I also know how to dance and sing! Not like those boys, who seem to be let loose outside every day playing basketball or soccer.”
Though the two girls came from different family backgrounds, they had become close friends who shared everything. The unspoken bond between the girls is synonymous with comfort and understanding. One of them said her parents worked in the flooring business. She told us that their work was very tiring, but once, during renovations, they found gold and jade, and she felt incredibly lucky. She whispered that it was a secret just between them, as her parents had told her not to pick up things that didn’t belong to her. Her eyes twinkled with a smile as she recalled the moment.
“Guess what my parents do for a living? Take a look at what you’re holding in your hand!” she asked playfully. I looked down at the recording device and phone I was holding. “That’s right, they fix phones! Our shop is in Wujing, really far from here, so they wake up super early every day. My parents often dress me with a lot of layers of clothes to make me feel warm and cozy during the long journey to school. I hope school can start at 10 o’clock every day!”
As the conversation gradually came to an end, we were talking about their dreams. “I want to go to a concert, I’ve never seen a celebrity up close!” said Zhang Kexin. “I have so many things on my wish list! When I grow up, I want to buy things for my parents, and I want to study hard and get into Tsinghua or Peking University,” said Lin Yuxin. They smiled at each other again, as if they had come to an unspoken agreement, silently signing a future contract.
Their smiles were even brighter than the sunshine.
“Our luck has always been good!” Hues of calmness, maturity, and anticipation intermingled in the girl’s bright smiles, revealing their forever optimism. And I knew, with steady optimism and vitality like theirs, their future ahead would undoubtedly be limitless, splendid, and blossoming.
